More on weeding & spraying

Weeds are the single most demoralising bit of garden work. You spend a Saturday clearing a bed, then three weeks later it looks like you never touched it. The trick is doing it at the right time, with the right method, and following up before the seed bank in the soil gets another shot. JJ approaches weeding as a recurring job rather than a one-off heroic effort.

For garden beds, hand weeding is almost always the right answer. JJ pulls weeds with the root, not just the top, which dramatically reduces re-growth. After a hand weed, beds get a top-up of mulch (50 mm depth) so light cannot reach any seeds left in the soil. That single combination — weeded plus mulched — gives you six to eight weeks of clean beds before the next visit.

For paths, paving cracks and driveways, a targeted spot spray is far more efficient than crawling around with a knife. JJ uses a low-toxicity glyphosate-based spray applied carefully to the weed only, with no overspray onto adjacent plants. It works in a few days and the dead weed brushes out cleanly with a stiff broom. For pet-conscious or kids-at-home households, JJ also offers a vinegar-based natural option that works on annual weeds (it does not kill perennials but is safer around kids and dogs).

How JJ does it

  1. 1

    Identify the weeds

Different weeds need different treatments. Couch in a garden bed wants pulling root-and-all. Oxalis wants smothering with mulch. Dandelions in the lawn want a weed-and-feed.

  2. 2

    Hand weed beds

Pulled with the root, not just the top, to slow re-growth.

  3. 3

    Targeted spray for hard surfaces

Glyphosate or vinegar-based spray applied directly to weeds in paving cracks, paths and driveways.

  4. 4

    Mulch and clean

Beds topped up with 50 mm mulch where needed, all pulled weeds bagged and removed.

Weeding & Spraying — common questions

  • Are the sprays safe around pets and children?

JJ uses registered products according to the label and will tell you the re-entry period before spraying. If you would rather avoid chemicals entirely, hand weeding and mulching are always an option — just say so when you book.
  • How long until the weeds die off?

Most broadleaf weeds visibly wilt within a week and break down over two to three weeks. Deep-rooted perennials sometimes need a follow-up pass, which JJ will flag at the time rather than after the fact.
  • What stops weeds coming straight back?

Mulch. A 50 mm top-up after weeding is the single most effective way to keep beds clear, and it holds soil moisture through January and February as a bonus.
