Pruning is the single most undervalued bit of garden work. Cut a rose properly in winter and you get armfuls of flowers in spring. Cut a fruit tree at the right angle and you double the crop. Cut a native at the wrong time and you lose the next season of flowers entirely. JJ understands the difference and prunes every plant on its own clock, not a generic schedule.
Roses get cut hard in late June or early July, down to clean outward-facing buds, with all the spindly internal growth removed. Apple, pear and stone fruit get a structural prune in winter and a summer tip prune to control vigour. Natives like grevilleas and callistemon get a light trim straight after flowering — never hard pruned, which kills them.
JJ also handles new planting. If you have a bed that needs filling, a bare patch where a tree came out, or you want to soften a fence with a screen of plants, JJ will help pick the right species for your aspect, soil and watering habits. Australian-grown stock from local nurseries, mulched in properly, with clear advice on how to water it through the establishment period.

Structural prune for shape, deadhead for re-flowering, or renovation cut to bring an overgrown plant back into proportion.

Local nursery stock, planted with a generous root ball, watered in heavily, and mulched to 50 mm.

All cuttings removed and a quick handover so you know how to water and care for the plant going forward.

Do you supply the plants?
JJ can source plants suited to your soil and aspect, or work with plants you have already bought. Either way the plant list is agreed before the job so there are no surprises on the invoice.When should roses and fruit trees be pruned?
Winter, while the plant is dormant — typically June through August in Melbourne. Pruning then means the energy goes into the framework you want rather than the growth you are about to remove.Can you prune without killing an established plant?
Yes. Established shrubs are staged over two visits when a hard cut back is needed, so the plant is never stripped in one hit. The aim is to frame windows, open walkways and keep beds healthy, not to shock the garden.
