More on blackberry removal

Blackberry is a declared noxious weed in Victoria for good reason — it spreads aggressively, forms thickets that nothing else can grow through, and the canes are armed with thorns that will go straight through a leather glove. Once established along a back fence or in a creek line, it will not go away on its own and getting on top of it takes a proper plan. JJ has cleared a lot of blackberry and knows what works.

Step one is cutting the canopy back hard. JJ uses heavy-duty loppers and a brush cutter where the canes are too thick for shears. Everything is bagged in heavy contractor bags as it comes off, not piled on the lawn — those thorns will work their way into your tyres, your pets and your kids for weeks if anything is left behind. The cut canes are taken straight off-site to a licensed green waste facility.

Step two is treatment of the crown. Blackberry runs from a deep, woody root system that will re-shoot the moment you cut the top. A targeted application of a glyphosate or triclopyr-based herbicide into the freshly cut stems is the most reliable way to kill the root and prevent re-growth. JJ does this carefully, only on the cut surface, with no overspray. A follow-up visit eight weeks later catches any new shoots before they re-establish.

How JJ does it

  1. 1

    Assess and protect

Walk the area, lay tarps where needed, check for adjacent plants worth keeping.

  2. 2

    Cut and bag

Heavy canes cut with loppers, finer growth taken off with a brush cutter, all bagged in heavy contractor bags as it comes off.

  3. 3

    Treat the crown

Targeted herbicide application onto cut stems to kill the root system and prevent re-growth.

  4. 4

    Follow-up at 8 weeks

Optional return visit to spot-treat any new shoots before they get established.
